Fourteen destinations across twelve months, so you can see at a glance when to go where.
China is large enough that the best month differs completely by region. July and August are the peak window for Qinghai and Inner Mongolia while the eastern cities are sweltering; December to February is Harbin's season while the south stays mild. Reading the matrix below by destination and month narrows your options quickly.
Each cell shows how good that destination is in that month. There are four levels.
Caution does not mean do not go. It flags variables such as heat, cold or crowds, and a flexible itinerary handles those fine.
Destinations run down, months across. Read the column for the month you have in mind to see which places suit it.

| Destination | Best window | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing | Apr-May, Sep-Oct | Spring and autumn are mild, which suits walking around the historic sites. Summers are hot, winters very cold. |
| Shanghai | Apr-May, Oct | Best to avoid the humid summer and the cold winter. |
| Xi'an | Apr-May, Sep-Oct | Sightseeing involves long walks, so the milder months are easier. |
| Chengdu | Mar-May, Sep-Oct | Mild all year, but summers are humid and often overcast. |
| Jiuzhaigou & Huanglong | Sep-Oct, May-Jun | Autumn colour and the lake tones are at their sharpest. It sits high, and some sections may close in winter. |
| Zhangjiajie | Apr-May, Sep-Oct | The season when the peaks sit in cloud. Summer is hot and crowded. |
| Guilin & Yangshuo | Apr-May, Sep-Oct | The river and karst read most clearly in these windows. |
| Qinghai | Jul-Aug | The best season for the lakes and grasslands. Outside it, conditions are cold and travel harder. |
| Gansu & Dunhuang | May-Jun, Sep-Oct | Desert daytime temperatures peak in summer, so spring and autumn are better. |
| Xinjiang | Jun-Oct | The north runs June to September, with autumn colour in September and October. Winter travel is difficult. |
| Tibet | May-Oct | High altitude makes winter harsh, and some areas may be restricted at certain times. |
| Harbin | Dec-Feb, Jul-Aug | Both the winter ice season and the summer escape draw visitors. |
| Inner Mongolia | Jul-Sep | The grasslands are green and the climate is mild in this window. |
| Hangzhou & Suzhou | Mar-May, Oct | The canal towns and gardens are at their best in spring and autumn. |
If your dates come first, use this list to pick the destination for that month.

Judging on season alone misses other variables worth checking.
This table is a reference compiled from seasonal and climatic patterns, not measured statistics. When citing it, please include the source (China Travel Guide, chinatravelguide.kr) and the date so it stays accurate.
Once the month and place are set, the next question is the route. Even in the same October, how you connect the north and the south changes the transfer time a great deal.
An operator running its own vehicles and guides in China, such as JoyoTour, can take the season and the route together and work out an order that holds up. JoyoTour has operated on the ground in China for 27 years since 1999, with 150 itinerary designers worldwide.

It depends on the region. Beijing, Xi'an and Zhangjiajie peak in April-May and September-October, Qinghai in July-August, and Harbin in December-February.
No. The eastern cities are hot, but Qinghai, Inner Mongolia and Harbin peak in summer. Changing region solves it.
Harbin is the obvious one. High-altitude regions such as Tibet and Qinghai are hard to travel in winter.
