Xining → Qinghai Lake → Chaka Salt Lake → Ta'er Monastery, 4 days
Small-group Qinghai travel by private vehicle with a dedicated guide. Visit Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake and Ta'er Monastery on the high plateau, with no shopping stops.
Qinghai sits in China's northwest, on a plateau more than 3,000 m above sea level. Its open lakes and grazing land create the scenery the region is known for, and the greenest months run from June to September.
We run Qinghai as a small group of 2 to 8 guests. A private vehicle and a dedicated guide travel with you, and we operate with no shopping stops and no forced extras. Ask us for a quote and we will match the itinerary to your dates.
China's largest saltwater lake, with a shoreline that runs about 360 km. In summer the water turns deep blue and the grazing land around it turns green.
A shallow salt lake that mirrors the sky. On clear days the clouds reflect off the surface, which makes it a favorite photo stop.
A Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Huangzhong County. It is known for butter sculptures and colorful thangka, and pilgrims pass through its lanes daily.
A paved path that follows the lakeshore. The gradients are gentle, so families can ride short sections comfortably.
Red sandstone formations cut by deep gorges. The Yellow River runs alongside, and the viewpoints look straight down the valley.
A pass east of Qinghai Lake with wide views over the lake and the grazing land. It sits high, so the wind is strong.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March–May | Snow melts and the grazing land slowly turns green. Day-to-night temperature swings are wide and the wind is strong, so warm layers help. |
| June–August | The most comfortable months. Daytime temperatures sit around 20°C and the land around the lake is at its greenest. This is peak season, so book rooms and vehicles early. |
| September–November | Clear skies and deep water colors make this a great window for photography. After October temperatures drop fast and some passes see snow. |
| December–February | Deep winter, with lows near -15°C. The lake freezes and most grazing land lies under snow. The scenery is striking but physically demanding. |
Fly from Incheon to Xining Caojiabao International Airport, direct or with a connection. Connecting routes take noticeably longer.
Xining connects to Lanzhou by high-speed rail, which pairs well with a Gansu itinerary. Trains also link the main towns within the province.
Distances between sights are long, so we travel by private vehicle. A dedicated guide stays with the group and keeps each day's driving to a comfortable length.
Arrive in Xining and visit Ta'er Monastery, then rest at a city hotel. The first day stays light so you can adjust to the altitude.
Drive from Xining to Qinghai Lake for the shoreline grazing land and Sun and Moon Mountain. Overnight near the lake.
Catch the morning light at Chaka Salt Lake, then ride part of the Qinghai Lake cycling path. In the afternoon continue to the Kanbula area.
Tour the Kanbula gorge viewpoints, return to Xining and transfer to the airport.
The Qinghai Lake area sits around 3,200 m. We keep the first day light, and we suggest drinking water often and avoiding strenuous activity. Tell your guide right away if you feel unwell.
We operate with no shopping stops and no forced extras. We do not build shop visits or paid add-ons into the itinerary.
Your dedicated guide speaks Korean. At local restaurants and hotels the guide handles translation for you.
With a private vehicle and shorter days, parents can join comfortably. Because of the altitude, we recommend a check-up first if they have heart or blood pressure conditions.
Always re-check the latest conditions on the official sites before you travel.
