Lanzhou → Zhangye → Jiayuguan → connection to Dunhuang, 6+ days
Small-group Gansu travel by private vehicle with a dedicated guide. See Zhangye Danxia, Jiayuguan fort, Mati Temple and Labrang Monastery, with no shopping stops.
Gansu is the northwestern province the Silk Road passed through. Zhangye's striped rock, the fort at Jiayuguan and monasteries such as Labrang each show a very different side of the region.
We run Gansu as a small group of 2 to 8 guests. A private vehicle and a dedicated guide travel with you, and we operate with no shopping stops and no forced extras. Ask us for a quote and we will shape the route to your dates.

A monastery in the hills near Zhangye, with cave shrines cut into the cliff. There are many steps, so wear comfortable shoes.
A Ming dynasty pass standing between desert and mountains. You can walk the ramparts and look out over the terrain.
A Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Xiahe. Its long halls and pilgrim circuit make for a memorable walk.
Stone pillars rising beside the Yellow River. You can combine a boat ride with the walking paths.
A bridge over the Yellow River in central Lanzhou. It is a pleasant evening walk with the riverside lights.
A mountain in Pingliang with Taoist temples and lookout points. A cable car climbs part of the way, then you walk.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March–May | Pleasant by day but chilly in the morning and evening. Flowers start to open, which suits city sightseeing. |
| June–August | The hottest window, with some days above 30°C. UV is strong around the rock and desert areas, so bring a hat and water. |
| September–October | Cool and clear, when the rock colors read best. This is the ideal window for a Silk Road route. |
| November–February | Lows reach about -10°C. Some sights are very windy, which makes it feel even colder. |
Fly from Incheon to Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport, direct or with a connection.
Lanzhou, Zhangye and Jiayuguan are linked by high-speed rail, which makes moving easy. The window views are part of the trip.
Distances are long, so we use a private vehicle. Your dedicated guide adjusts the route day by day.
