Xining · Qinghai Lake · Chaka · Dachaidan · Dunhuang · Zhangye · Qilian
A private 8-day loop from Xining through Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Dachaidan, Dunhuang, Zhangye Danxia and the Qilian grasslands, with your own guide and vehicle and a gradual rise in altitude.
This is the route that shows you why people come to the northwest: salt flats, desert, painted rock, cave art and grassland, each one a day apart. You start in Xining, follow Qinghai Lake to Chaka and Dachaidan, cross to Dunhuang for the Mogao Caves and the Singing Sand Dunes, then return through Jiayuguan, Zhangye Danxia and the Qilian grasslands.
Altitude is the one thing we plan around. The first two days stay low, in Xining and around Qinghai Lake, so your body has time to adjust before the higher passes. Groups are kept to 2-8 guests with your own vehicle and guide throughout.
Your guide meets you at the airport or rail station. You spend the day at around 2,200 m, easing into the altitude with a light dinner in the city.
Drive out of Xining to Qinghai Lake and follow the southern shore road past grassland and open water. Above 3,000 m we keep the pace slow and stop often for photos.
Reach Chaka Salt Lake early, when the shallow water turns into a mirror for the sky. In the afternoon continue to Dachaidan, where desert meets lake, and check in.
A long, wide drive across the plateau to Dunhuang. You rest in the vehicle, and in the evening we wander the lanes of the Shazhou night market.
Enter the Mogao Caves on a pre-booked time slot. Later, at Mingsha Shan and Crescent Lake, ride a camel and climb the dunes.
Stop at Jiayuguan, the western end of the Great Wall, then continue to Zhangye. From the ramparts, desert and snow peaks share one view.
See the striped rock formations in the morning light, when the colours are strongest. The afternoon brings the Qilian grasslands and the road that runs beneath the snow range.
Return across the Qilian grasslands to Xining. Your guide stays with you to the airport, and any extra days can be arranged.
A shallow brine lake that reflects the sky like a mirror. We time your visit for the early morning, when the wind is calm.
A reserved-entry cave complex on the Silk Road. We lock in your viewing slot in advance so you walk straight in.
Crescent-shaped water held between sand dunes. Camel rides, with a late-afternoon visit.
Layered bands of red rock. The colours are sharpest when the sun comes in at an angle, so we plan around that hour.
High country where grassland and snow peaks share the frame. The drive stops whenever the view is worth it.
The first two days stay low on purpose. Higher stretches are driven slowly, with plenty of water stops.
We spend the first two days at around 2,200 m in Xining and near Qinghai Lake, so your body adjusts before the higher sections. We remind you to drink water and move slowly, and we adjust the plan if you are not feeling well.
No. Your group keeps the vehicle and guide to itself. For groups over 20 we split into separate vehicles and guides.
We do not build shopping centres or forced stops into the itinerary. If you personally want to visit a local market or shop, we add it and let you decide.
Your guide is with you the whole way and handles restaurants, transport and payments, so language is not something you need to worry about.
It depends on your dates, group size and hotel category, so we quote on request. Message us on WhatsApp or WeChat with your dates and numbers.
