Inner Mongolia splits into two main kinds of destination: grassland and desert. The first decision in any Inner Mongolia travel guide is which one to build your trip around.

The two differ in terrain, activities, and lodging style. Below we cover the differences, access, seasons, and what to pack.

Inner Mongolia in short

Base the trip on either grassland or desert, and add the other if time allows.

Doing both takes at least four to five days because of the distances. Hohhot is the hub.

Grassland and desert are different trips

Grassland areas are rolling hills of open pasture, mostly 600 to 1300 meters above sea level. You move by car and often stay in yurts or ger-style camps.

Desert areas center on dunes, with camel rides, sand sliding, and desert vehicles. Even within one region, the packing and the feel are completely different.

Planning the grassland

Grassland trips usually mean driving out from the hub and staying one or two nights.

  • Xilamuren: a grassland north of Hohhot reached by road.
  • Hulunbuir: a vast grassland across the northeast, with long drives.
  • Yurt stays: great for stargazing, with horse riding and walks by day.

Nights get cold, so bring a thick layer even in summer.

Planning the desert

Desert trips usually take half a day to a full day of sand activities.

  • Kubuqi Desert: a wide expanse of dunes.
  • Xiangshawan: a hub for desert activities.
  • Ordos: pairs desert with nearby heritage sites.

Sand is fine, so protect cameras and phones, and bring a hat and mask.

Seasons, packing and access

Grassland is best June to September, greenest in July and August. Desert is comfortable May to October.

  • Temperature swings are wide: short sleeves by day, a layer at night.
  • Dry air: moisturizer and lip balm.
  • Spring sandstorms: bring a mask.
  • Reach the hub by air or high-speed rail, then use a private car.

Local conditions can shift the plan in both areas, so confirm transfers with your operator.
