Dunhuang is where the Silk Road split between its northern and southern routes. Cave temples, old fortress walls and sand dunes all sit within a short drive, so even a brief trip feels full.

We split the days between morning and late afternoon. The desert bakes at midday and cools towards evening, so dunes and outdoor ruins go at golden hour, while the Mogao Caves are booked for a morning slot.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Dunhuang

Your guide meets you at the airport or station. You drop your bags and spend the evening in the Shazhou night market.

Day 2

Mogao Caves, then the dunes

Enter the Mogao Caves on your reserved morning slot. In the afternoon, climb the dunes at Mingsha Shan and look down on Crescent Lake.

Day 3

Yumen Pass and the Yardang desert

Head west to the old fortress walls of Yumen Pass, then drive through the wind-carved Yardang formations to feel the scale of the desert.

Day 4

Yangguan and the Dunhuang museum

Visit Yangguan, the southern gate of the Silk Road, then spend the afternoon at the Dunhuang museum. The evening is yours.

Day 5

Departure

Your guide sees you to the airport or station. This trip can be extended into a longer Silk Road route on request.

At a glance

Mogao Caves

A reserved-entry cave complex on the Silk Road. We book your viewing slot so you walk straight in.

Mingsha Shan and Crescent Lake

Crescent-shaped water between towering dunes. We climb at golden hour for camel rides and dune ridges.

Yumen Pass

The remains of an old frontier gate. Desert and sky meet on the horizon.

Yardang formations

Wind-sculpted earth and sand ridges. The colours deepen as the sun drops.

Yangguan

Where the southern Silk Road began. Ruins and open desert keep the old route in view.

Desert-aware timing

Outdoor ruins and dunes are scheduled for morning and evening to avoid the midday heat.

FAQ

I am worried about sandstorms. Will that be an issue?

On windy days we reorder the plan to see indoor sites first and move outdoor stops to the calmer hours.

I heard the Mogao Caves are hard to book.

Entry runs on fixed time slots. We collect your passport details early and secure your viewing time.

Is the no-shopping promise real?

We do not include shopping centres or forced stops. If you want to visit a local market, we add it and let you decide.

Is this OK with children?

The camel rides and open dunes are a hit with kids. We schedule them for the cooler morning and evening hours.

How do I find out the price?

It depends on your dates, group size and hotel category, so we quote on request. Message us on WhatsApp or WeChat with your dates and numbers.
