What to actually check when comparing policies.
Travel insurance is better treated as a planning item than an optional extra for a China trip. Overseas medical costs are hard to predict, and the things that go wrong on a trip, from delayed flights to changed plans, can be covered. Coverage and exclusions vary a great deal between policies, so read them before you buy.
The least predictable part of any trip is a health problem. Hospital treatment abroad is often available without an appointment, but the cost structure differs from home and is hard to estimate.
Add flight delays, delayed baggage and changed plans, and you have several ways a trip can get more expensive. Travel insurance is how you cap that exposure.
Compare policies on their conditions, not their names.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Medical limit | Determines what actually gets paid |
| Exclusions | Shows the situations not covered |
| Baggage and belongings | For loss or delay |
| Delays and cancellations | For rebooking costs |
Cover has to be arranged before departure. Buying on the day of travel or at the airport can change when cover starts, so do it in advance.
Buy a day or two more than your itinerary needs. If a delayed flight pushes your return, the original window may already have closed.
Declare any pre-existing condition and any medication you take. Claiming for something you did not declare can get the claim refused.
Also find out in advance how to contact the insurer. When something happens, not knowing who to call wastes time. Save an English certificate on your phone so a hospital can read it.
Folding insurance into the consultation stage means it does not get forgotten. Ask an operator that runs its own vehicles and guides in China, such as JoyoTour, and it forms part of the same preparation list as the itinerary.
Having 24-hour support on the trip also helps: insurer contact and on-the-ground response can run at the same time.
Evidence is what matters when something goes wrong. If you receive treatment, get the medical report and the receipts: once you are home, obtaining them from abroad is difficult.
For loss or theft you may need a local police report. Save the insurer's contact details and 24-hour line on your phone so you can reach them the moment something happens.

Whether it is required depends on the circumstances and should be verified. Given overseas medical costs and the cost of changing plans, arranging it is the safer practical choice.
Cover should be arranged before departure. Buying later can change when protection begins.
A day or two beyond your itinerary. If a delayed flight pushes your return, the original window may have closed.
It depends on the policy and conditions. Always declare it and confirm what is covered.
The right measure is not how many cities you list but how much time transfers eat. Distances in China are long, and every extra city costs roughly half a day of travel. For a first visit, two cities in 7 to 9 days is a reasonable start; focusing deeply on one region works in 5 to 7 days.
Read the answerAim to start at least two to three months ahead. The usual order is to fix flights first, then build hotels and intercity travel around those dates. Chinese public holidays compress availability sharply, so either avoid those windows or start much earlier.
Read the answerChina does not have a tipping culture in the sense most travellers know. Tipping in restaurants and taxis is not the norm and no service charge is added to the bill. Thanking your guide and driver is entirely up to you and never required, and costs not included in your quote should not be asked for at all.
Read the answerYou can hail a taxi on the street in China, but using a ride-hailing app is far safer: you set the destination on a map and the app handles the fare and the payment, which removes most of the language problem and much of the room for dispute.
